Are Symptoms all in your head?

David Hompes is someone that I look up to when I am looking to broaden my knowledge of lifestyle and wellbeing and as you will know from my previous blogs I am continuously looking to top up my knowledge base.

One area that has really caught my eye and got me thinking about is the idea that physical symptoms have a non physical component, relating to your state of mind. As a professional sports player injuries are commonly associated with the nature of the work. Then, people’s mentality plays a large role in the grand scheme of being in sport in order to perform, so it is interesting when combining both injuries and non physical symptoms.

The idea is about issues held in the mind can cause problems/ symptoms in a physical form. So in relation to professional football an injury you believe you have sustained from over working on the training pitch or from impact may actually have stemmed from a “non-physical” cause.
“Thus, failure to acknowledge and deal with these mysterious non-physical issue may result in little or no progress on a health program, even if food, supplements, exercise and other methods are being effectively implemented.” – David Hompes.

This is where building a strong mentality and learning about the processes of the mind allows you to be able to understand the workings of the brain and pinpoint areas where “non-physical” symptoms may lie and you are able to manage them preventing the problem from developing.

I can relate this area to rehabilitation from injuries and the potential affects it could have. If you are unclear of timescales or have a minor setback, this is naturally going to be thought provoking. If this is allowed to gather pace or you are unable to keep a grip on it, it could be harmful to the progression of your physical recovery.

The non-physical symptoms issue can affect anyone and it highlights the importance of mental health and lifestyle.
